SCIENCE OF READING: DYSLEXIA PROCESS AND INTERVENTIONS
The U of SF has approved the workshop Science of Reading: Dyslexia (University of Sioux Falls) for college credit (Edu198D.3). REGISTRATION FOR THIS WORKSHOP IS A TWO PART PROCESS. FIRST, you register on this website and either fax (605-716-3424) credit card information to Dr. Arnio or send a check for $179 to 5429 Timberline Trail, Rapid City, SD 57702. SECOND, you register for college credit at the University of Sioux Falls website. If you have any difficulites with the college credit registration, contact Stacy Meadors (stacy.meadors@usiouxfalls.edu) or 605-331-6781. The content includes an understanding of the information available from the SCIENCE OF READING versus the Balanced Literacy debate. This workshop specifically addresses three areas: 1) Review of the basis for reading relative to the development of language (i.e., what should be taught in what order); 2) Understanding of what dyslexia is and what should be involved in the diagnosis of dyslexia; and 3) What type of reading interventions and school accommodations should be used with dyslexic students. All students are to complete two webinars (My Teacher Companion and Understanding Dyslexia) in addition to three hours of lecture from Dr. Arnio and Jean Gunderson. These meetings can be attended online, or by watching the video of the meeting if the time of the lecture does not work with the student’s schedule. All students will be asked to turn in answers to questions about material covered during the lecture. The total contact time for the webinars and lectures is approximately15 hours.
For the 2022 Summer session dates of the three lectures will be: Register here for the SummerWorkshop.
Lecture 1: MONDAY, June 6, 2022 6:00- 7:30 PM MDT (This is a live interactive Zoom session.) Lecture 2: MONDAY, July 11, 2022 6:00 - 7:30 PM MDT (This is a live interactive Zoom session.) Lecture 3: MONDAY, August 15, 2022 6:00 - 7:30 PM MDT (This is a live interactive Zoom session.)
Each student will be provided15 hours of instruction by completing two programs and attending or viewing the three lectures. The Teacher Companion takes a minimum of 8 hours to complete and Understanding Dyslexia 4 hours. THESE MODULES CAN BE COMPLETED AT THE STUDENT’S PACE ANYTIME DURING THE COURSE. Most find it helpful to have My Teacher Companion completed by the second lecture and Understanding Dyslexia by the third lecture, BUT THE STUDENT CAN DETERMINE WHEN TO COMPLETE EACH.
BE AWARE THAT YOU CAN PURCHASE THE TWO WEBINARS DIRECTLY FROM THE PUBLISHER. DO NOT DO THIS BECAUSE YOU WIILL THEN BE IN THE WRONG DATABASE AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET CREDIT FOR HAVING COMPELTED THE PROGRAMS. THE COST IS INCLUDED IN YOUR $179 FEE.
Each module has a series of 10 pre-test and post-test questions. 80% of the grade will be based on the module completion. 20% will be based on responses to the questions about the content in the three lectures. Following each lecture, the students will be sent the questions to answer. There is a great deal of attention being paid to the area of dyslexia at this time. This workshop will not only provide teachers needed information to understand what dyslexia is, but also what type of instruction and accommodations these students will need to be successful. |
